This week’s marks the official start of spring, but it definitely doesn’t feel like it in LA yet! Where is my sunshine and 70 degree weather, California?!
LA has been unusually cold and wet this year, and even though I’d normally be transitioning into my spring wardrobe by now, I’m actually still wearing fuzzy knits and long coats on a daily basis.
Just because we have to dress functionally in order to stay warm, though, it doesn’t mean we can’t still incorporate warmer weather elements into our wardrobe, right?
One of my favorite ways (and one of the easiest too) to add elements of warmer seasons into a transitional wardrobe is through prints! Whether that’s through polka dots, florals, or fruit prints, there’s nothing more weather-appropriate than these fun patterns! My absolute favorite, though, are stripes! Not only are they super easy to wear, this nautical print also reminds me of one of my favorite seasons ever – summer!
If you’re also a fan of nautical stripes, read on to see how I style and wear them before summer begins!
1. Incorporate Stripes in Weather Appropriate Clothing
Like I mentioned earlier, LA is nowhere near warm enough for me to actually start wearing skirts or shorts, but that doesn’t mean I can’t still channel a warmer weather look. All I have to do is pick the right pieces that not only act functionally, but also stylistically. And the best and easiest way to do so is by wearing nautical stripes in the form of trousers!
With a lighter color palette, nautical stripes perfectly embody the easy-going nature of warmer months, and it’s a big plus that the vertical print does wonders in helping you look leaner and taller.
2. Opt for the Right Fabric
Something that a lot of people overlook when it’s comes to styling is the effect a fabric can have on the whole outfit. The right kind of fabric can definitely do wonders in helping you achieve a look that brings to life the message you’re trying to convey.
When wearing nautical stripes, we’re definitely trying to embody a fresh look that progressively steps away from colder weather, and the best way to bring this message to life is to opt for lighter fabrics, such as cotton or linen.
With these lighter fabrics, trousers can look a bit more dressed down, which fits that effortless, laidback nature of the warmer months.
3. Keep Your Color Palette on the Lighter Side
And of course, color palette plays one of the most important roles in determining the overall mood of an ensemble, don’t you think? For spring and summer outfits, here’s nothing more appropriate than a lighter color palette, and even though it’s not necessarily spring or summer just yet, I still try to incorporate as many of these colors into my wardrobe as possible.

Great point about using lighter colors to freshen up heavier clothing! I don’t think I actually have any weather appropriate clothing in a lighter color!

I love stripes and also paper waist pants so these are perfect for me. I love how you dressed it for this transitional weather we are having with it still being cold and not quite spring/ summer yet. These pants would fit me just perfect on length since you are so much taller than me. =). Such a classy look!

I can’t really say I’m a fan of the stripes but I like the legit French marine print. Especially on the tops. Ps. These pants look so good on you.
