Black and white. The most iconic and classic combination. Though it may seem “a bit boring” to some, there’s nothing more chic yet minimal about a black and white ensemble. Of course, there are definitely ways to make these simple outfits more exciting, and today, I’ll be sharing the simple ways I make my black and white ensembles more fun yet sophisticated!
1. Pay Attention to Silhouettes
I’m pretty sure most of you are sick of me stressing the importance of silhouettes, but I really can’t help but keep repeating myself when it comes to this because it’s super important to dress in a way that highlights your best assets.
For me, I like to dress in a way that highlights my smaller waist and accentuates my legs, so there’s no better way than a crop top and a figure-hugging high-waisted skirt.
For this particular occasion, since it’s still a bit chilly in LA, I opted for a cropped turtleneck and midi skirt. I’m a big fan of the shorter top and figure-hugging fit of the skirt because it not only highlights my waist, making it appear skinnier, the silhouette helps to bring out my (almost non-existent) curves as well, which I’m very happy about haha!
2. Don’t Forget About Textures and Fabrics
Aside from silhouettes, one of the easiest and most effortless ways to add a touch of uniqueness to your ensembles is through the choice of fabrics. During the winter months, it doesn’t take too much extra efforts to incorporate different textures into your outfit effortlessly, since you’ll most likely be wearing different forms of knits anyways.
To give some more visual dimension to this whole outfit, I opted for different variations of knits. For my top, I decided to stay cozy and picked one of my recent favorite fuzzy turtlenecks, and for my bottoms, I gravitated towards a ribbed-knit fabric that’s perfect for the winter.
When dressing in black and white, mixing up different textures can definitely help to give your outfit more visual interest, and it keeps things from being too boring, don’t you agree?
3. Don’t Be Afraid to Add White Accessories
I’m not too sure about all of you, but by default, I always opt for black accessories, whether that’s in the form of bags or shoes. When dressing in this classic color combo, though, it may be interesting to mix things up, and I find that white shoes look extra chic when worn with these types of monochromatic ensembles. I’ve been obsessed with white boots, oxfords, and sneakers lately, and they add that perfect touch of subtle sophistication to a simple outfit, don’t you think?
