Oh LA, is it ever gong to cool down?
Much to my dismay, it’s still pretty warm in California, and it’s still a bit too hot for me to wear my knits… But I’m not going to let that stop me from updating my fall wardrobe to incorporate more autumn pieces; I mean, if life doesn’t give you the chances that you want, you have to go out there and make opportunities for yourself, right?
Hahaha all jokes aside, though, I haven’t been able to get enough of high-waisted trousers these past few seasons, and for the fall, there’s nothing quite like checked trousers, don’t you think?
There’s just something about the mix of warm colors in this traditionally autumn print that makes it so fall-appropriate yet sophisticated! Though I’m definitely a big fan of these pretty checks, there is a “right” way to wear this trend, and today, I’m going to go over all of the do’s and don’ts revolving one of my favorite prints for the season!
1. Do Pair with Muted Colors
While jewel tones are a definite fall staple, when it comes to checked trousers, there’s nothing that completes the outfit more chicly than muted colors. In particular, I think neutrals like ivory, tan, gray, and black are some of the best choices, since they go with just about everything. Of course, my personal favorite will always be white because it makes for such a sophisticated ensemble, don’t you think?
2. Don’t Mix with Another Checked Print
I’m definitely on board with mixing different patterns and prints since these combinations can make for some really interesting and unique looks by adding dimension to an ensemble as a whole, but there’s definitely a time and place for that! With checked bottoms, I feel like there’s already a lot going on in this outfit, so if you pair another similar type of print with it, this ensemble can feel too “busy.” Rather than going overboard, it’s best to keep in mind the rule of “less is more” in order to create an effortless and chic ensemble, don’t you think?
3. Do Opt for Figure-Enhancing Pieces
Though loose knits are some of my favorite fall staples, when I’m wearing high-waisted trousers, I tend to opt for more figure-hugging pieces instead because I want to define my silhouette for a feminine yet sophisticated look. I find that one of the best tops to pair with high-waisted trousers are crop tops, since they effortlessly highlight the waistline, which in turn, makes trousers a lot more fun and appropriate for wearing out, don’t you think?
4. Don’t Go for Oversized Fits
And of course, on a similar note, don’t lean towards oversized fits when it comes to tops, since that can overpower the outfit, making it appear shapeless and sloppy. There’s always balance when it comes to styling, so just be sure you’re dressing to highlight the right pieces.
