When you think of corsets, the first image that comes to mind are the bone-crushing garments that women from the 1800s wore, but if you’ve been paying attention to the runways and the streets, then you’ll know that corset tops are becoming more and more popular lately!
Traditionally, corsets are worn to shape the body into a “desired” shape, but modern corset tops usually just mimic the “corset” style, without actually squeezing the living daylights out of you!
Other than the actual composition, there are also ways for you to make sure your corset top isn’t outdated or stuffy! Read on to see how I style my corset top in a less traditional way, so it’s perfect for the everyday modern girl!
1. Opt for a Cropped Cut
When crop tops first started being trendy, I wasn’t too ecstatic about them, mainly because I wasn’t too confident about baring my midriff. With time, though, I gradually grew to love them, especially since there are now more choices with varying top-lengths, and I love the ones that hit a certain spot on my torso because it gives the illusion of a smaller waist! It also helps that high-waisted bottoms are just as, if not more, trendy than crop tops, making it even easier to style these shorter tees and blouses!
When choosing a corset top, a cropped version is definitely my top choice because it’s the perfect mix of modern and traditional. With details like corset strings that embody the traditional corset and a cropped silhouette that’s the epitome of modern, this top is instantly elevated for a contemporary and chic look, don’t you think?
2. Pay Attention to Your Choice of Color
While I love white tops, when it comes to a corset top, a white one just seems a bit too traditional, especially if you’re opting for a more modern take on the whole look. This is why I gravitate towards darker colors, like black or navy, because they’re still classy and elegant, but at the same time, contemporary.
The color black is definitely sexier and more sensual, which makes it a perfect choice for a “night-out” kind of look! For a more daytime friendly ensemble, though, navy is always a good choice because it’s sophisticated yet effortless!
3. Pair with Fun and Modern Bottoms
And of course, when it comes to completing the look, there’s nothing like fun and modern bottoms, such as denim shorts and a-line skirts, that makes for a chic yet contemporary look!
While shorts work for a more casual ensemble, opting for a skirt really brings out that feminine sensuality that only a corset can embody. For a dressier look, opting for a skirt in the same color as your top will help to streamline the ensemble for a classier and more elegant outfit. For something more casual and fun, a skirt in a lighter color definitely helps to bring out that youthful vibe, don’t you think?

These are all really great tips for styling a corset top! I’ve never worn one before but I think the modern take on it is so pretty. I love how you styled the one you’re wearing! I think sticking to darker colors is smart and a high waisted skirt would be my choice for bottoms x
