Fashion faux-pas – we’ve heard them all, and we should know by now that we have to do our best to avoid them at all costs, right? Well, rules were also made to be broken, don’t you agree? 😉
One of the most common fashion crimes to commit is definitely wearing denim with denim (or at least, that’s one of the ones that I’ve heard of the most). While denim on denim can definitely look tacky and a little over-the-top, when done right, an all denim ensemble can actually be quite effortless and chic, don’t you think so?
If you agree, read on to see my three tips on how to wear an all denim look without looking too over-the-top!
1. Choose Denim in Different Washes
I’m sure you all know this by now, but picking denim in different washes makes all of the difference. Typically, I like to mix my grey denim with my traditional blue jeans, but lately, i’ve been wanting to take more and more fashion risks. That’s why I opted for medium-wash jeans for this all-denim look.
Although both my jacket and bottoms are from the same color family, the key to making them stand out is to pay attention to the details of the fabric. While my jacket is made of a more solid, smooth blue denim fabric, my bottoms have a more “pebbled” effect, due to the white threads that are weaved in to it.
In paying attention to subtle differences like this, you can wear the same family color of denim without it looking like you’re in a tacky matching denim suit of sorts, giving the outfit a more contemporary, modern, yet chic feel.
2. Don’t Be Afraid to Play with Silhouettes
Of course, when styling an effortlessly sophisticated ensemble, you can never forget to factor in the silhouette that you create. In the past, I generally stuck to more common silhouettes, such as skinny or straight-legged jeans, but I’ve really been loving wide-legged trousers and jeans lately. There’s just something about the looser silhouette and cropped length that seems more effortless and perfect for the warmer days, don’t you think?
It also doesn’t hurt when you pay attention to subtle details that help to add just the right touch of quirky, cuteness to the ensemble as a whole, such as this paper-bag, ruched waist and the bow-tie belt, both of which adds an element of fun to the outfit.
For the jacket, I opted for a vintage silhouette, with structured shoulders, cropped length, and defined waistline, since it contrasts so obviously against the modern feel of the jeans. The juxtaposition of these pieces, both in silhouette and design, makes for a stark contrast that sets these denim pieces apart, even though they’re from the same color family.
3. Balance with a Pop of Color
And of course, it can never hurt to add a pop of color to the ensemble, right? Although we’re wearing an all denim outfit, pops of colors can be added to the look through accessories, such as shoes and bags.
Other than adding touches of baby blue and soft ivory through my boat shoes and shoulder bag, I also wanted to tie the whole look together with a cropped lavender sweater.
Lavender is such a popular color this season, and I think it adds the perfect air of casualness to the whole ensemble. Another big plus – it really to soften the look for an all denim outfit that’s trendy, yet wearable on a daily basis.

I personally love an all denim look. It is so classic and you usually don’t have to go buy anything bc most everyone has a denim jacket and jeans in their closet already. I love these denim pants! The tie waist is a great detail and changes up the look. xoxo, Christine
